AFTER SCHOOL HOURS Chapter 6

CHAPTER SIX: DECISION MADE

At this, the whole class got interested. They had noticed the Eunice and Oyindamola’s tiptoes and are also aware that some female senior students had made their class a library. So they are eager to know who he had finally chosen. Most of the boys have been jealous that since they started the school, they have not been centers of affection from the girls, where as Kunle who had just been admitted not more than two months ago had captured the hearts of the girls of the school. Some had concluded that he is a lucky, brilliant chap. Meanwhile, in the course of Kunle’s speech, Bimpe had accompanied Funmilayo to SS2D. They had stopped at the entrance to hear what Kunle was saying. Bimpe also had gotten interested in what Kunle had been saying and the decision he had made. She had started to wonder if he had neglected her friend for another. Funmilayo herself had long gone to wonder land. Their last discussion was that of an agreement, he had wanted to be sure if she would be fine with her studies and she had promised she would be able to manage it. He had held her hand and while she sat in between his legs, he had placed his jaw right at the centre of her head. That was enough to tell her that he had agreed to love her even without the words. Oyindamola and Eunice are also having a burning sensation within and are wondering whose name it would be. ‘With all they have written, he should consider them’ they had both thought. But just then, Kunle, who had gone into a long silence, resumed his speech. “Unfortunately, the one who I have pasted her image in my heart is not in this class”. At this Oyindamola sat with her head to the table. Same shame had befallen Eunice. This two are the known girls in the class. Who then is she? These questions had come across the heart of all listeners of Kunle’s speech.

Funmilayo looked up to see Mr. Ibeji coming toward the class. Mr. Ibeji is the Literature-in-English teacher. He walks with long strides as if he was Williams Shakespeare. His use of language however has been a sort of disappointment to all his students. This is because; Mr. Ibeji is a replica of Williams Shakespeare. The picture of the latter which is boldly placed above Mr. Ibeji’s seat in the staff room looks exactly like Mr. Ibeji himself. The only difference is the ‘Igbotic-english’ coming out of the literature teacher. As he strides nearer, Funmilayo hoped that Kunle would vomit the name of the one whom he had decided. Kunle had continued “I can’t date someone in my class; I will not be able to help her. She would become lazy knowing that her boyfriend would write the note from the board, help her copy it into her book and help her assimilate all what the teacher would teach. But the one I have found, her name is…..” Even though, Funmilayo had wanted to hear the name, she had probably hoped it is her name and wants to stop him from calling her name to the ears of her juniors. Just then she found a way, Mr. Ibeji is just steps away from the entrance. He had seen the two of them and was wondering what they were doing at the entrance of the classroom. Funmilayo knelt down to stop Mr. Ibeji from hearing Kunle’s speech and also to stop Kunle from mentioning her name which she is sure is the name on his lips. At her kneeling, she was on the entrance. Kunle can now see her. Mr. Ibeji is surprise at her show of respect. “Madam Social Director” he had started “I am surprised at your level of respect. What are you doing here?” he had asked her. Funmilayo looked into the class to see Kunle smiling at her, she smiled back. Turning to Mr. Ibeji she said “If I happened to see Williams Shakespeare face to face. I would have done the same and waited on my kneels for him to pass before continuing my journey. Since you are our William Shakespeare, I have no option than to accord you the same respect.” She had gained enough time for Kunle to go back to his seat and for other classmate of Kunle to comport themselves. The words she had used were those of Kunle. He had told her just yesterday that the first day he saw Mr. Ibeji he had wondered how this school had gotten the costume of the great Shakespeare himself. On another note he had thought this is human and not costume and bowed his head until Mr. Ibeji had passed. He later heard Mr. Ibeji talking with another teacher and he laughed at the character of Mr. Ibeji.
Bimpe who had followed her so as to hear from his mouth that he is also in love with her friend was crossed with Funmilayo.  “you would have allowed him to say the name” she said talking to her friend as they stroll back to their classroom. “What name? Funmilayo asked. “he almost called the name of the one who he had decided to love, but you stopped him with your act” Bimpe had protested. Funmilayo had to stop her friend so as to drive her words into her brain. “I did that on purpose, he was going to mention my name there, in front of his classmate. Do you know what that means, I will lose my respect, the boys, the male students of that class will not want to obey  and respect me as a Prefect, they will say she is dating our class mate” “but didn’t you know that that is what it will result to?” Bimpe had asked. “If you truly love him as you claim, you would drop shame and hear says and claim what is yours. And if he loves you too he would have to respect you especially in the presence of his mates. He would also have to defend you and fight for you at all times”. Bimpe had advised. As they got back to their class, Funmilayo pondered over everything she had heard. If truly she was the one he had decided, she had to prove to him that she can manage her studies and their relationship. She has to inform her mother, but what would her mother say? Won’t she disapprove of the relationship? Now she pauses to remember the exact words Kunle had used. Yes! Now she remembers, he had said he promised his late father… his late father! Does that mean his father is dead? Was that why he changed school? Oh! It must be that his mother could not afford to pay the fees of his former school and so she had to change his school. All these thoughts ran through her mind and she decided she was going to ask him since she would be seeing him again after school. She smiled remembering how stupid she must have been at the door post while greeting Mr. Ibeji and how pitiful she must have looked like while seating in-between Kunle’s legs the previous days. What would have happened if any teacher had come into the class at that time. The story wouldn’t have been “seating in-between a male’s legs” it would have been making love which would have been having sexual intercourse.
What! Sex!
