After School Hours chapter 5

CHAPTER FIVE: THE LETTERS

Kunle Fosu came into the class with others immediately after the assembly. Barely had he sat when he saw Eunice staring at him. Eunice had been expecting him to sit down and bring out his books because she had hidden her letter in his English note book. Eunice seeing that she had been caught staring quickly looked elsewhere. Suspecting something, Kunle opens his locker and there right on his bag he found it. He could not touch; he looked at Eunice and back at the letter. He picks it up and reads it. He smiles as he read through but he was surprised at the end of the letter, it was not Eunice, it was Oyindamola.
She had written her name in bold letters.
Yours sincerely
PRINCESS OYINDAMOLA
OF IGANMURE KINGDOM

He looked around to see Oyindamola blinking her eyes. He shook his head, drops the letter back into his locker and just then the English Language teacher walks in. After the salutation, she demanded for everyone’s note saying that she was going to mark their notes. Everyone started to bring out their note and heading to the front table to submit. Kunle quickly searched for his and brought out his note  to submit, a white envelop fell from it. He immediately picked the envelop up, opens the locker to drop it as he had earlier done but was surprised to see that the one he had dropped earlier was still intact. He dropped it into the locker and wondered why Oyindamola had decided to load his bag with letters. Coming back to his seat, he picks the envelop and opens it to reveal the letter. Without reading through he goes down to the end of the letter to know the sender. Surprise written on his face. This isn’t from Oyindamola but from Funmilayo.

Funmilayo has sat up through the night with a biro and a blank paper. She wants to write something but what could she write. Finally, a thought came and with a smile, she puts the biro on the blank paper and started scribbling things on it.

Having seen the sender, Kunle decided to start reading from top. Funmilayo had written how foolishly she has fallen in love with a guy who she had just met. A guy who happens to be her junior in school. How she has thought of him throughout her lesson that she couldn’t recall anything she had learnt the whole day. How she had ran out of class to meet him and how now she can’t sleep but wants to write something to show him that she is deeply in love with him. Kunle smiled, he looked up to see Eunice staring at him. Their eyes met and she smiled. He knew she was up to something. The first letter was from Oyindamola and the second one from the Social Prefect. Definitely the one that belongs to this daughter of a business tycoon should be hidden somewhere. Kunle searched through his bag and did not find any other letter. He on a second thought raised his bag up from the locker and there it was, a brown envelop. He raised it up so that she could see it but this made Oyindamola who also had been staring at him angry. She could not believe it that just as she was planning to write her later, there were two other girls who had the same thought in mind. Kunle read through Eunice’s love note and he thought within himself ‘I have just started this school, I came to learn but this girls just like the girls from my former school won’t let me be. Even if I must have a girlfriend she won’t come from this class. It can neither be Eunice nor Oyindamola, they are too young.
Although Eunice and Funmilayo are age mates, I would have to choose Funmilayo’ he had concluded. Just then the English teacher ordered one of the students to follow her to the staff room with the books. Oyindamola stood up in attempt to come to Kunle’s seat but was amazed that Eunice also had the same thought. They realized that Dayo, who had offered to share his seat with Kunle had pinned his buttocks to the seat. The previous day, Eunice had had to bribe him to exchange his seat with hers and Oyindamola had been lucky to see that the other seat to where he sat had been vacant. “Dayo!” shouted the two girls. This caught the attention of the entire class. Dayo is also confused on whose call he should respond. All eyes are now plucked to the desperate girls and shame has caught up with them. Still not sure of what to do, Kunle moves to the front of the class and stands in place of a teacher. “while in my former school” he had started “I had a problem of making a decision for some students expulsion from school. They had liked me but because I had promised my late father to face my studies and not to allow anything or anyone make me lose concentration, I had ignored them. They became enemies, one trying to out-do the other. One day they got into a fight and tore their uniforms into pieces. The Principal got to know about this and expelled them. Since my resumption to this school, I had noticed some likeness from students from this class and out of this class both in lower classes and higher classes. But before things would turn out like before I have to make a decision”.
